The facade lighting

The lighting of Westpoint was designed by Herman Kuijer (1953)

Method: 'Color cannot be precisely determined or described. The eye sees many colors every day. They are immediately sent to the brain, but there they quickly seem to disappear into thin air. Color is elusive because it changes as daylight (or a light source) becomes stronger, weaker or turns. Color is only visible when light shines on it or through reflection.

Kuijer makes this phenomenon visible in his work. He sees the effect of color and light as something that also occurs in other areas of nature and life. Again and again and always different.'

The two initiators of Westpoint – Ballast Nedam and ABN Amro – not only wanted a residential complex, they also wanted a work of art and commissioned visual artist Herman Kuijer to give extra meaning to the tower.

Herman Kuijer saw the honeycomb structure of concrete and glass as the support for an enormous painting. He provided the vertical tiles and the horizontal concrete elements with a color, a different pastel shade for each apartment. A colored light source will be placed between the concrete elements on each floor. With the light of the residents themselves and the natural light elements of day and night, Kuijer has turned it into a living work of art that constantly changes in appearance.
